Edson W. Spencer was born in Illinois in 1926, and was educated at Williams College and at Oxford University, where he was a Rhodes Scholar. He worked for Sears Roebuck before joining Honeywell, Inc. in 1954. He became president and CEO of Honeywell in 1974 until his retirement in 1987. The Multics operating system was developed at MIT's Project MAC in cooperation with Bell Laboratories and General Electric beginning in 1964. It was written in PL/I, a high level programming language, and designed to adapt to future needs.
